Chapman University initiated a Water Conservation Action Plan aiming to reduce water consumption on campus. One of the components was to reduce the amount of lawn and increase bio-diversity. The first phase of the program eliminated over 17,000 square feet of lawn and an estimated nearly 500,000 gallons of water annually.
A campus wide low water consuming plant palette was developed for the various site conditions including storm water treatment, habitat gardens, native and adaptive non-native gardens. In addition to the lawn, inefficient spray head were switched to subsurface drip irrigation. LINK is currently working on the second phase of the program.
