The Campus Center is a 52,000 sq. ft. renovated structure at the Chapman University Rinker Health Science campus. The building program is a combination of academic and support services for students including dining, lounge, study spaces and gathering areas.
The Alton Building landscape design combines California natives with newly adaptive non-native plant materials chosen for their medicinal value, aromatic qualities, habitat generation and low water consumption. The synergistic blending of traditional and new plant palettes create the wholistic garden. The native plant palette is concentrated on the west portion of the site and the adaptive non-natives are concentrated on the east end of the site. The two palettes are stitched together with repeating linear bands of planting, paths, and board formed concrete seat walls with wood topping.
The medicinal garden is anchored with two Valley Oaks (Quercus lobata) and shrubs and groundcovers in the medicinal garden include Yarrow (Achillia millefolium), California Lilac (Ceanothus sp.), California Rose (Rosa californica), and Golden Currant (Ribes aureum). The primary planting rows used to blend the two palettes are Cleveland Sage (Salvia clevelandii) and Medicinal Aloe (Aloe vera).
The east side of the site is where there are more adaptive non-natives and they interlace with the natives in the middle of the site. Low water consuming non-native plants such as the Palo Verde (Parkinsonia ‘Desert Museum), Coast Rosemary (Westringia fruticose), Fortnight Lily (Dietes sp.), and Blue Elf Aloe (Aloe sp.) were chosen for their color and are great pollinator plants. Much like the Sage, Medicinal Aloe (Aloe vera) is planted in long rows to help stitch the two plant palettes together.
